Welcome to the second issue of the Enterprise Data Journal.  Like other sophomore efforts, we are benefiting from lessons learned from our first issue.  Most notably we are delighted at the response of readers willing to participate in the collection of pertinent data.  In general we were well received, but at the same time, we are addressing any critiques that provided positive feedback.  Thanks again.

This edition of EDJ is the first of a two part series on analytics and data warehouse.  We are focusing on these two topics because the former is going through a new wave of offerings and interest, and the latter, while required in some manner, has been around for nearly 20 years.

This issue focuses on Enterprise Information Management (EIM).  But before we dive into EIM I need to explain about our changes to the editorial calendar.  You may remember we were going to do a trends issue.  We did our trends survey within our body of companies, consultants and vendors, but we did not get consistent conclusions, i.e. everyone’s trends were so varied we could not really make a reasoned call.

Master Data Management is this issue’s topic.  MDM, as it is called by us who do not want to re-type it twenty times an article, is one the top three information management-related efforts for 2008 (according to our survey and a few others).  Granted there are a handful of crabby types out there who say “We have been doing that for years, it’s just a new name”.  That may be true, but if you were THAT good at it why are we still addressing MDM as “new” programs?  The answer is simply this – true, we have done master files, and even an ODS here and there.  The difference is that we are really beginning to develop a disciplined, asset management approach to managing core reference data, and this IS NEW STUFF.  And anyone who says they have been doing THAT kind of MDM for decades is full of beans.

This issue of Enterprise Data Journal (EDJ) is devoted to “Semantics” and how semantic technologies relate to enterprise data management. I have a special interest in this topic both personally and professionally, so EDJ’s regular editor John Ladley has gracefully stepped aside to allow me to write the editorial for this issue.
